Freedom's View

For decades, this tower that withstood the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, has stood tall, a symbol of resilience and freedom. From 1939 – 1969, it played a crucial role in overseeing the harbor and runway as part of the naval base’s operations.

On Memorial Day 2022, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum opened the historic Ford Island Control Tower, bringing Freedom’s View to the public. For decades, this tower that withstood the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, has stood tall, a symbol of resilience and freedom. From 1939 – 1969, it played a crucial role in overseeing the harbor and runway as part of the naval base’s operations.

Though the Tower remained operational guiding safe arrivals and departures of private pilots through 1999, the next decade was marked by deterioration due to the passage of time and harsh weather conditions. However, it was the concerted effort and financial support of many of you who turned the tide on this historic structure.

Beginning in 2011, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum launched a restoration project, stabilizing the tower by replacing 53 tons of steel. This was followed by years of restorative work and finally, the repair of the elevator. After more than 10 years of work, the amazing experience of ascending to the top of the tower became a reality.
