Aviation Learning Center

The Aviation Learning Center offers interactive learning experiences and activities that give students and adults a hands-on appreciation of flight.

During the two-hour experience, participants get a taste of ground school in the Learning Lab, perform a pre-flight check inside a Cessna 150 airplane, chart and plan a flight, and navigate their own route as they fly a simulator. An introduction to ground school, students move through 3 modules of aviation education: practical science, pre-flight responsibilities, and simulated flight. Within the Learning Lab, students study and apply aviation concepts through experimentation and group discussion. In the Hangar, students conduct a pre-flight check on an aircraft as well as ready a flight plan for submission. Finally, the Simulator Bay culminates the day’s activities in a virtual flight over Oʻahu along a pre-determined route. As a timed program, any late arrivals are subject to activity changes.
Students recognize the duality of our unique mission as both an aviation and World War II museum. While one half of the visit is dedicated to the history of our storied aircraft, the other brings the power of flight to life in our state-of-the-art Aviation Learning Center. Time is equally divided between our most powerful programs in one all-encompassing experience.
*Due to capacity limitations, any groups requesting an Aviation Learning Center experience, totals over 36 students, and is limited to a visit timeframe of 3 hours or less, will be redirected to the Historic Hangar Tours Only program option. Scheduling a separate day for an Aviation Learning Center Only experience is recommended.
Explore aviation below the very aerial battlefield which started World War II for the United States. This unique experience begins with the Attack on Pearl Harbor, and continues on through Pacific aviation history to the present day. Students discover this rich history through guided tours and a rotation of activities surrounding the aircraft and aviators that passed through Hawaiʻi and into history. Emphasis on the Pearl Harbor attack is given.
From Pearl Harbor to Peace is a youth program designed to highlight how Hawaiʻi’s unique ethnic makeup and culture directly affected the outcome of WWII for the Pacific. Participants will analyze factors that led the former adversaries of WWII to build a framework for peace that has endured for over 75 years.
K-2 Experience*
Students are lead through 3 activities which highlight aircraft design and function. The large components of an aircraft are discussed in a brief 2-D assembly activity, then reviewed using our iconic warbirds. The true tale of Martin Vitousek and his daring escape from the Pearl Harbor attack illustrate aircraft controls and their purposes. Finally, students visit a real aircraft to see how each control and its control surface works together. Students and chaperones are given the choice to return to the museum exhibits on their own until their bus arrives for departure.
