Top 5 Reasons to Join Flight School for GirlsMay 19, 2021
Looking for a fun and educational program for the kids this summer?
Spots are still available for our popular five-day Flight School for Girls from July 19 – 23! The program, offered to students in grades 6 – 8, is designed to inspire the next generation of women in aviation.
During our Flight School for Girls program, your student will have the opportunity to…
#1: Connect with other girls who have a passion for STEM and aviation!
Do your kids need a break from all the screen time that comes with distance learning?
Our Flight School for Girls program launches students into an action-packed week discovering the world of aviation through fast-paced STEM activities, alongside their peers. Students will experiment with the forces of flight, learn about weather and atmosphere, explore the history of aviation in Hawaii, and so much more, all while making new friends!
Most importantly, our summer STEM camps allow students to learn in-person in a safe way.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students will be required to wear a face covering at all times, practice social distancing and follow our health and safety guidelines. Our goal is to have a fun, educational summer camp in a way that protects students, their families and our staff. Together, we can do it!
#2: Talk Story With Women in Aviation
Students will have the rare opportunity to meet and talk story with women who have achieved success in the aviation industry!
Local girl Abigail Dang, a 2012 Flight School for Girls alum, will join us in-person to talk about her journey to becoming a pilot at just 17 years old! She was awarded with the Col. Robert Moore Scholarship for Initial Pilot Training from Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum in 2019 and earned her private pilot’s license in the same year. Abigail just graduated high school in 2020 and is currently working to earn all her flight certificates, including her Flight Instructor Certificate.
Annie Domko will also join us to discuss her fascination with aviation as a young girl and how scholarships helped launch her career as a pilot. Today, she is an instructor pilot at the Fleet Replacement Squadron and has served as President of Women in Aviation Intl. Honolulu.
Students will also hear from Kristen Leyva, a mission communications engineer for NASA’s launch services program. As an MCE Kristen helps LSP’s spacecraft customers help prepare the communication and telemetry requirements for launch.
Your student will gain knowledge and inspiration from Abigail, Annie, Kristen, and other female aviation professionals in-person and virtually!
#3: Explore America's WWII Battlefield
What better place to learn about the impact of flight, than at the only aviation museum in America that bears scars from the Dec. 7, 1941 aerial raid on Pearl Harbor?
Located on historic Ford Island, Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum’s collection is housed in two historic hangars that withstood the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Students will explore these authentic WWII-era hangars, helping them understand the importance of aviation and STEM throughout history.
#4: Be the First to Experience SHTEAM
For the first time, our first-rate educators will be introducing SHTEAM (science, history, technology, engineering, art, and math) to students, intertwining history with classic STEM education.
Each activity will be focused on a specific time period in aviation history and designed using STEM experiments, reasoning, critical thinking, and creativity for problem solving.
“Ideas shape the course of history.” – John Maynard Keynes.
#5: Earn Your Wings after Five Days of High-Flying Fun! (And Extra Perks)
Flight School students will “earn their wings” during a graduation ceremony at the conclusion of the camp, where they will be presented with a special pin and certificate commemorating their Flight School experience.
After five days of hands-on learning with new friends, your student will gain a sense of accomplishment and leave with memories that will last a lifetime!
Plus, we'll give you a couple extra perks...
Snacks and lunch are included to keep students fueled throughout the day AND each student will receive a free Flight School t-shirt!
