Classification: Exempt; Full-time
Expected Hours: 40 hrs weekly 
Compensation: Salary range of $135,000 – $160,000 (Commensurate with qualifications and experience.)

Lead finance for one of America’s most historically significant aviation museums.

Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum (PHAM) stewards America’s first aviation battlefield of World War II. Located on historic Ford Island at Pearl Harbor, the Museum preserves and interprets the events of December 7, 1941 and the Pacific War that followed—honoring those who defended our freedom while educating and inspiring future generations.

PHAM operates in a complex financial environment that includes museum operations, aircraft collections and restorations, capital construction projects, grants, donor‑restricted funds, and federal and state compliance obligations.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Finance & Controller serves as the Museum’s senior financial leader and trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors. This role blends Controller‑level execution with strategic financial leadership, providing CFO‑level insight within a lean finance structure.

This is a hands‑on role requiring direct involvement in day‑to‑day accounting operations while leading financial planning, budgeting, compliance, audits, and Board reporting. The role will evaluate and strengthen financial systems, processes, and controls while supporting organizational growth and capital investment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Operations & Compliance
  • Nonprofit GAAP accounting and financial reporting (AICPA standards)
  • Annual audit coordination (financial, governmental, workers’ compensation)
  • IRS Form 990 and Hawaiʻi General Excise Tax filings
  • Grant accounting, compliance tracking, and reporting
  • Payroll, benefits, and retirement plan oversight

Financial Leadership & Planning

  • Annual operating, development, and facilities budgets
  • Multi‑year forecasting and cash‑flow modeling
  • Capital project and aircraft restoration financial oversight
  • Donor‑restricted fund stewardship

Governance & Controls

  • Board and Finance Committee reporting
  • Internal controls, risk management, and process improvement
  • Vendor and contract financial oversight

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 8–15 years of progressive accounting and finance experience
  • Significant nonprofit accounting and audit experience
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a hands‑on senior financial leader

Preferred:

  • Active CPA license strongly preferred (or equivalent senior nonprofit experience)
  • Public Accounting Manager or Senior Manager background
  • Museum, cultural institution, or governmental experience
  • Experience with Sage or comparable accounting systems (Option to change platforms)
