Job Summary:
Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum’s mission is to steward America’s World War II aviation battlefield – sharing the artifacts, personal stories, the impact and response to the attack on December 7, 1941 and the Pacific region battles that followed – and to honor those who defended our freedom so we might educate and inspire future generations.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director, Education holds a key role in delivering the Museum’s mission through education. The Director, Education has the privilege of impacting youth by shaping and stewarding the Museum’s education programs, which teaches history’s important lessons and provides opportunities for youth to explore and prepare for diverse careers within the aviation industry. In partnership with Museum leadership, the Director, Education ensures that education programs are carefully planned, coordinated, and delivered with historical accuracy and adherence to policy and best practice. This position leverages knowledge in aviation and military history to inspire future generations.
Collaboration is a key to success as the Director, Education will work closely with Museum leaders and a variety of external partners and stakeholders to develop and implement programs that align with American Association of Museums, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and similar education standards.
KEY Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership of each of the Museum’s Education Programs:
- Collaborates with the Executive Director and the senior leadership team in the development and execution of board- approved, annual and long-range Education strategic plans.
- Ensures that the implementation of the strategic plan is within budget and on schedule.
- Leads and influences the direction and strategic decision-making for each of the Education programs: Youth Education, Aviation Pathways – Pilot Training, and Aviation Pathways – A&P; Ensures that the programs are interconnected with other functions of the Museum and delivers its programs as a cohesive component of the Museum’s mission.
- Provides leadership, development, and coaching to each of the direct reporting leaders and their teams of employees. Manages the personnel responsibilities of its staff, including recruitment, hiring and performance management, and serves as a resource to its direct reporting managers in coaching and developing their staff.
- Provides mentorship and facilitates career development in order to build capabilities of and create growth opportunities for the Education staff. Provides support and offers guidance to each direct reporting staff and their teams.
- Provides leadership through annual organization and academic planning cycles, and ensures its teams are prepared and accountable for their scopes of activities. Delegates as appropriate.
- Leads the evaluation of the Museum’s education programs by establishing metrics and standards of success that demonstrate high-quality community impact and participant satisfaction. Develops and implements comprehensive data collection and analysis methods to measure program effectiveness, guide continuous improvement, and provide data for grant reporting and stakeholder communication.
- Collaborates with the Development Director to secure grant funding for educational programs. Participates in the grant writing process by providing detailed program information, evaluation metrics, and budget projections.
- Approaches challenges with an innovative, solution-oriented mindset and challenges their team to perform with the same mindset. Motivates the Education staff, and reviews processes and programs for continuous improvement opportunities.
- Supports the administration of the Museum’s Individual Scholarship offerings and Aviation Pathways grants program(s), ensuring alignment with the museum’s educational mission.
- Is a primary advocate and spokesperson for the Museum’s education programs.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.
Required qualifications:
- Education: Graduate from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in education or museum management, or related field.
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible leadership experience in education, museum functions or aviation; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
- Excellent communication skills to address varying audiences using varying modes of oral and written communication. Ability to compose and deliver presentations to various audiences, internally and externally.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- Demonstrated initiative, creativity, judgment, and complex problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency and demonstrated ability to quickly learn computing systems and digital platforms, including but not limited to: Windows and/or Apple computing environments, data management software, Microsoft Office products (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.). Experience in presentation and publishing software, email and internet search engines and research techniques; and web site content support.
- Ability to manage effective working relationships and social networks that produces high-quality results.
- Valid driver’s license, and a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
- DOE certification
- Experience in a commercial aviation maintenance environment
- Experience teaching young students in a formal classroom setting
- Experience teaching students in an operational environment with real-time event or scenario-based event requirements and settings

- Interest in aircraft, aviation and military history.
- Understanding of, and respect for persons of military background.
- Positive public relations attitude and approach when dealing with the public.
- Organizational ability to work with executive supervision on all assignments.
- Position must be able to travel to attend meetings and conferences.
- Develops a working relationship with Department of Education.
- Develops a working relationship with the Pearl Harbor Historic Partners as well as other Hawaii and National Museum education programs
PHYSICAL Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk/work station and working at a computer, working internally and outside/external at times both on campus and other sites/facilities
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
Compensation:
$92,000 annually, commensurate with job-related experience, skills and competencies, education, internal equity, years of experience in the field, including leadership, and other organizational needs.
